Thursday 17 Sep 202618:00 (Live at Martha's)

Broadoak have been playing together as a group for seven years, but Chris Kay (voice, whistle), Wendy Lewis (fiddle, voice) and Peter Kay (fretted instruments, voice) have been playing together informally for much longer than that.

Their roots are deep and wide in all genres of music: folk in all its forms, obviously, but also classical, rock (with a special mention for prog rock), pop, gamelan, electronica, Welsh Chapel and more.

Their own material leans towards narrative: their hit show Abereiddy told the amazing story of the village from 1800 to the present. On the other hand, Birdsongs was an impressionistic look at the links between birds and human beings. They sing a selection of traditional songs and covers: their only real criterion is that they have to enjoy singing the song.

A Broadoak gig ranges widely in tone, with tales of comedy, tales of tragedy, and the beauties of everyday life. Their “signature sound” is vocal harmony dancing on a supple web of fiddle and guitar.

Come along a listen to their sweet tones for the next Live at Martha's gig at Theatr Gwaun.

Mae Broadoak wedi bod yn chwarae gyda'i gilydd fel grŵp ers saith mlynedd, ond mae Chris Kay (llais, chwiban), Wendy Lewis (ffidil, llais) a Peter Kay (offerynnau ffret, llais) wedi bod yn chwarae gyda'i gilydd yn anffurfiol ers llawer hirach na hynny.

Mae eu gwreiddiau'n ddwfn ac yn eang ym mhob arddull o gerddoriaeth: gwerin ym mhob ffurf, wrth gwrs, ond hefyd clasurol, roc (gyda sôn arbennig am roc prog), pop, gamelan, electronica, Capel Cymru a mwy.

Mae eu deunydd eu hunain yn tueddu at naratif: roedd eu sioe boblogaidd Abereiddy yn adrodd stori anhygoel y pentref o 1800 hyd heddiw. Ar y llaw arall, roedd Birdsongs yn olwg argraffiadol ar y cysylltiadau rhwng adar a bodau dynol. Maen nhw'n canu detholiad o ganeuon traddodiadol a chaneuon clawr: eu hunig faen prawf go iawn yw bod yn rhaid iddyn nhw fwynhau canu'r gân.

Mae gig Broadoak yn amrywio'n fawr o ran tôn, gyda straeon am gomedi, straeon am drasiedi, a harddwch bywyd bob dydd. Eu "sain llofnod" yw dawnsio harmoni lleisiol ar we hyblyg o ffidil a gitâr.

Dewch draw i wrando ar eu tonau melys ar gyfer gig Byw yn Martha's nesaf yn Theatr Gwaun.
