Director: John Huston/1956/UK/118'
In celebration of the 70th anniversary of its release, On Land’s Edge presents a special screening of ‘Moby Dick’, which was filmed right here in Fishguard!
Largely filmed in Fishguard Bay, Moby Dick (1956), directed by John Huston and based on Herman Melville’s great American novel, follows young sailor named Ishmael (Richard Basehart) who joins the whaling ship The Pequod under the command of the brooding Captain Ahab, played by Gregory Peck.
The impressionable Ishmael and harpoonist Queequeg (Friedrich von Ledeber), who befriends him, join the ship’s crew despite the dire quayside warnings of a strange man named Elijah (Royal Dano) who tells them The Pequod is cursed and that all who sail with Ahab will meet their doom.
Ahab’s life is consumed by a vengeful obsession to hunt the giant white whale that maimed him, leaving him with an artificial leg carved out of whalebone.
As the movie unfolds, he leads the Pequod’s crew into a perilous, high‑stakes voyage in grim pursuit of his quarry, blind to the instincts and fears of others.
With powerful performances—especially Gregory Peck’s intense Ahab—and fine supporting roles played by Leo Genn (Starbuck), Orson Welles (Father Mapple) and Harry Andrews (Stubb), Moby Dick remains a gripping, memorable adaptation as the fanatical Ahab follows the great white whale to the ends of the earth on a quest which can only end in tragedy...
'Warning: this film made in the 1950s includes footage of an actual whale hunt, which people may find upsetting.'

I ddathlu 70 mlynedd ers ei rhyddhau, mae On Land’s Edge yn cyflwyno dangosiad arbennig o ‘Moby Dick’, a ffilmiwyd yma yn Abergwaun!
Wedi’i ffilmio’n bennaf ym Mae Abergwaun, mae Moby Dick (1956), wedi’i gyfarwyddo gan ac yn seiliedig ar nofel Americanaidd wych Herman Melville. Mae morwr ifanc o’r enw Ishmael (Richard Basehart) yn ymuno â’r llong hela morfilod Y Pequod dan law Capten Ahab, a chwaraeir gan Gregory Peck.
Mae Ishmael yn un hawdd ei ddylanwadu, ond mae e a’r harpwnydd Queequeg (Friedrich von Ledeber), yn dod yn ffrindiau. Maent yn ymuno â chriw’r llong er gwaethaf rhybuddion difrifol ar y cei gan ddyn dieithr o’r enw Elijah (Royal Dano) sy’n dweud wrthyn nhw fod Y Pequod wedi’i felltithio a bod pawb sy’n hwylio gydag Ahab yn mynd i wynebu eu tynged.
Mae bywyd Ahab yn cael ei arwain gan obsesiwn dialgar i hela’r morfil gwyn enfawr a’i anafodd, gan ei adael â choes artiffisial wedi’i cherfio allan o asgwrn morfil.
Wrth i'r ffilm ddatblygu, mae Ahab yn arwain criw'r Pequod ar fordaith beryglus, llawn risgiau, wrth ddilyn ei ob sesiwn, heb sylwi ar reddfau ac ofnau eraill.
Gyda pherfformiadau pwerus—yn enwedig yr Ahab dwys gan Gregory Peck—a rolau cefnogol gwych a chwaraeir gan Leo Genn (Starbuck), Orson Welles (Father Mapple) a Harry Andrews (Stubb), mae Moby Dick yn parhau i fod yn addasiad gafaelgar a chofiadwy. Dilynwn y morfil gwyn mawr i ben draw'r ddaear ar daith na all ond orffen gyda thrasiedi...
Rhybudd: mae’r ffilm hon a wnaed yn y 1950au yn cynnwys golygfeydd o hela morfil go iawn, a allai bod yn drafferthus i bobl.

This year’s headline music gig at Theatr Gwaun sees an amazing lineup of local Welsh talent with two of the rising stars of the Welsh music scene, Lafant and Chwaer.
We kick off with Chwaer, performing as a duet, then in the second half the headliners Lafant will take us to the close.
Growing up on the geographical and cultural edge of things has given Lafant’s sound a unique urgency. The three-piece from the shores of the Irish Sea in north Pembrokeshire take inspiration from the 60s’ British Invasion bands and American Surf Rock but also from the swagger of Britpop and the angst of grunge. Their tight interplay underpins stories of love and lust, of youthful follies, jealousy and joy, sung with a sincerity gifted to those raised in the middle of nowhere.
Tentatively poised on a precarious ridge somewhere between the valleys of folk and chamber pop, Chwaer’s sound has developed over the past year into a behemoth of deep, confident harmonies, rolling drums and powerful piano. Dueting in a way only sisters can, with the angst that only teenage lives can muster, their piano driven epics are visceral, moving pieces, thanks in part to their sincere, heartfelt delivery, buoyed by their, and their band’s skilled musicianship.
Since releasing their debut single ‘Paid Troi Dy Gefn’, the sisters Emma and Lucy have played a score of support slots around Wales, and in 2026 will appear at Gŵyl Fel ‘Na Mai and Eisteddfod Y Garreg Las after winning the yearly Richard and Wyn Memorial Award. Their debut EP will be released later in 2026 on Fflach Cymunedol.

Mae prif gig cerddorol Theatr Gwaun eleni yn cynnwys y gorau o dalent leol Gymreig gydag ymddangosiad dau o fandiau mwyaf blaenllaw’r sîn gerddoriaeth Gymreig, Lafant a Chwaer.
Bydd y ddeuawd swynol Chwaer yn agor y noson, ac yn yr ail hanner bydd y prif berfformwyr Lafant yn ein diddanu gyda set o’u caneuon gwreiddiol.
Mae tyfu i fyny ar ymyl daearyddol a diwylliannol pethau wedi rhoi naws unigryw i sain Lafant. Mae’r triawd o o Ogledd Sir Benfro yn cael eu hysbrydoli gan fandiau British Invasion y 60au ac American Surf Rock ond hefyd gan swagger Britpop a phryder grunge. Mae eu sain tynn yn sail i straeon am gariad a chwant, am ffolineb ieuenctid, cenfigen a llawenydd. Mae eu steil perfformio yn arddangos y didwylledd a roddir i’r rhai a fagwyd yng nghefn gwlad.
Yn sefyll yn betrusgar ar gopa ansicr rhywle rhwng cymoedd cerddoriaeth werin a phop siambr, mae sain Chwaer wedi datblygu dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf i fod yn glorwth o harmonïau dwfn, hyderus, drymiau byrlymus a phiano pwerus. Gan ganu deuawdau mewn ffordd na all ond chwiorydd ei gyflawni, gyda'r emosiwn na all ond bywydau pobl ifanc ei ddatgan, mae eu epics piano yn ddarnau gweledol, cyffrous, diolch yn rhannol i'w cyflwyniad diffuant, llawn calon, wedi'i atgyfnerthu gan eu chwarae medrus nhw a'u band.
Ers rhyddhau eu sengl gyntaf 'Paid Troi Dy Gefn', mae'r chwiorydd Emma a Lucy wedi chwarae sgôr o slotiau cefnogi ledled Cymru, ac yn 2026 byddant yn ymddangos yng Ngŵyl Fel 'Na Mai ac Eisteddfod Y Garreg Las ar ôl ennill Gwobr Goffa Richard a Wyn. Bydd eu EP cyntaf yn cael ei ryddhau yn ddiweddarach yn 2026 ar Fflach Cymunedol

This year we are opening the festival with a Moby Dick themed Lantern Parade, and we would love you to join us.
Ar Ymyl y Tir 2026 On Land’s Edge have teamed up with Small World Theatre to deliver a spectacular lantern parade to celebrate Fishguard and Goodwick’s historical link to the filming of Moby Dick in 1954.
The team at Small World have been busy building a large scale Moby Dick lantern that will lead the parade. They are also facilitating school and public lantern making sessions so that dozens of school children and members of our communities can join the parade with their own ‘fish and ships’ lanterns. Will you join us?
The parade will begin at 7:00pm on Friday 25th September from Ysgol Bro Gwaun and we will set out on a short, 1 hour (approx.) parade through Fishguard.
In preparation for the parade, why not join us at one of the public lantern making workshops on 19th and 20th September and be part of this wonderful celebration of our local heritage?

From the play by Orson Welles, adapted from Herman Melville
In 1954, while working on his starring role in the film Moby Dick, the great actor and director Orson Welles wrote a play based on Herman Melville’s novel. The play is set in a New York theatre where a company of actors are rehearsing a production of King Lear. One of the actors has written a play based on Melville’s book, and persuaded the company’s director to let him organise a read-through of the play.
We are opening On Land’s Edge 2026 with a staged reading of an abridged version of the play, using local actors (including some familiar faces in the twin towns). You will thrill as they conjure up the Pequod’s voyage on stormy seas, as the search for whales turns into a desperate hunt for one particular whale. Sail alongside the curious observer and story-teller Ishmael, the upright and conscience-driven first mate Starbuck, and the obsessive, terrifying Captain Ahab.
This amateur production of ‘Moby Dick – Rehearsed’ is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk

O'r ddrama gan Orson Welles, wedi'i haddasu o gyfrol Herman Melville
Ym 1954, wrth weithio ar ei brif ran yn y ffilm Moby Dick, ysgrifennodd yr actor a'r cyfarwyddwr gwych Orson Welles ddrama yn seiliedig ar nofel Herman Melville. Mae'r ddrama wedi'i lleoli mewn theatr yn Efrog Newydd lle mae cwmni o actorion yn ymarfer cynhyrchiad o King Lear. Mae un o'r actorion wedi ysgrifennu drama yn seiliedig ar lyfr Melville, ac wedi perswadio cyfarwyddwr y cwmni i adael iddo drefnu darlleniad o'r ddrama.
Rydym yn agor On Land's Edge 2026 gyda darlleniad llwyfan o fersiwn fyrrach o'r ddrama, gan ddefnyddio actorion lleol (gan gynnwys rhai wynebau cyfarwydd o Abergwaun ac Wdig). Cewch eich cyffroi wrth iddynt ddychmygu taith y Pequod ar foroedd stormus, yn chwilio am forfilod mewn helfa anobeithiol am un morfil penodol. Hwyliwch ochr yn ochr â'r sylwedydd chwilfrydig ac adroddwr straeon Ishmael, y prif fêt unionsyth a chydwybodol Starbuck, a'r Capten Ahab obsesiynol, brawychus.
Cyflwynir y cynhyrchiad amatur hwn o ‘Moby Dick – Rehearsed’ trwy drefniant gyda Concord Theatricals Ltd. ar ran Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.co.uk
