EIN HANES

Sir Henry Morton Stanley, I presume?

Speaker: John Roberts

Born John Rowlands, in Denbigh in 1841, this Welshman had a very traumatic childhood. How he became a journalist, soldier, and the famous explorer of central Africa who ‘found’ David Livingston is a remarkable story. He later became a British politician and campaigned against the slave trade, so why are his achievements still not met with universal acclaim?

CV: Most of my working life was in education: junior and grammar schools, an English language centre, FE colleges, Polytechnic and universities (Wolverhampton and Newport).  I spent a few years on building sites and three years in the Caribbean taking money (legitimately) from mostly American tourists.  My family is Welsh, from around Tredegar but as a result of the diaspora I was born and brought up in the Black Country.
