Book launch by author Maggie Stringer, interviewed by Mike Ponsford about her time spent in Bolivia.

Breaking Barriers is a memoir based on the seven years Maggie and her husband, David, spent in the tropical plains of Bolivia, in Montero, in the ‘Oriente’.

It portrays, through the actions, struggles and conflicts experienced by women there, how systemic sexism, racism and the ever-changing networks of culturally sustained patriarchal power perpetuate and maintain prejudice alongside the brutal oppression of disenfranchised barrio women and their children.

The book recounts how relationships of mutual trust between the author developed with the barrio women.

It also describes how encountering the daily struggles of the women to break seemingly impossibly negative attitudes towards them changed Maggie’s approach to living her life. She discovered how uncertainty was an authentic way to live.

Lansiad llyfr gan yr awdur Maggie Stringer, wedi'i chyfweld gan Mike Ponsford am ei hamser yn Bolifia.

Mae Breaking Barriers yn hunangofiant sy'n seiliedig ar y saith mlynedd a dreuliodd Maggie a'i gŵr, David, yn byw yng ngwastadeddau trofannol Bolifia, ym Montero, yn yr 'Oriente'.

Mae'n portreadu y brwydrau a'r gwrthdaro a brofir gan fenywod yno, wrth iddynt wynebu rhywiaeth systemig, hiliaeth ac effaith rhwydweithiau pŵer patriarchaidd. Maen nhw yn gweithredu’n greulon ac yn gormesu menywod tlawd, difreintiedig y barrio a'u plant.

Mae'r llyfr yn adrodd sut y datblygodd perthnasoedd o ymddiriedaeth gydfuddiannol rhwng yr awdur a menywod y barrio.

Mae hefyd yn disgrifio sut y gwnaeth y profiad o gefnogi brwydrau dyddiol y menywod newid bywyd Maggie. Bu’n dyst i’r agweddau negyddol tuag atynt, Sylweddolodd bod ansicrwydd a pheidio â gwybod 'yr atebion' yn ffordd ddilys o fyw.

Saturday 20 Sep 202519:00 (Film /Live with Angela V.John)

The screening of Mr Burton is followed with Angela John in discussion with Michael Ponsford on the subject of 'Philip Burton goes to America'.

Director: Marc Evans/2025/UK/124mins

In the Welsh town of Port Talbot,1942, wayward schoolboy Richard Jenkins is caught between the pressures of his struggling family, a devastating war and his own ambitions.

The remarkable true story of one of Wales’ finest talents, starring Toby Jones and Lesley Manville.

The film ‘Mr Burton’ ends in 1951 as Richard Burton wows Stratford and theatre critics with his acting. But what happened to his great mentor Philip Burton?  His biographer Angela V. John discusses how the erstwhile schoolmaster reinvented himself in mid-century America as a theatre director, ran a New York stage school, delivered lecture-recitals on Shakespeare across the States, wrote books and finally found his ’Significant Other’. He spent his final decades in Key West. He continued to advise Richard behind the scenes. The inter-dependence of the two Burtons persisted.

Dangosiad y ffilm Mr Burton, ac i ddilyn bydd Angela John yn trafod gyda Michael Ponsford ar bwnc 'Philip Burton yn mynd i America'.

Cyfarwyddwr: Marc Evans/2025/UK/124munud

Yn nhref Port Talbot, 1942, mae’r bachgen ysgol ystyfnig Richard Jenkins yn delio â thrafferthion teuluol, rhyfel dinistriol a’i uchelgais personol.

Stori wir ryfeddol un o dalentau gorau Cymru, gyda Toby Jones a Lesley Manville yn serennu.

Mae’r ffilm ‘Mr Burton’ yn dod i ben ym 1951 wrth i Richard Burton rhyfeddu Stratford a beirniaid y theatr gyda’i actio. Ond beth ddigwyddodd i’w fentor mawr Philip Burton? Mae ei gofiannydd Angela V. John yn trafod sut y gwnaeth y cyn athro ysgol ailddyfeisio ei hun yn America, yng nghanol yr 20fed ganrif fel cyfarwyddwr theatr ac ysgol lwyfan yn Efrog Newydd, darlithydd a pherfformiwr Shakespeare ledled yr Unol Daleithiau, ac awdur llyfrau. Yn y pen draw, daw o hyd i’w bartner bywyd. Treuliodd ei ddegawdau olaf yn Key West. Parhaodd i gynghori Richard y tu ôl i’r llenni. Perthynas rhyngddibynol fu perthynas y ddau Burton.
